On Thursday, Spokane celebrated not one, but two big steps in the beautification of an important entry point into our city.

Mayor Condon cut ribbon on the Division Street Gateway Project along with several community partners including Virgil “Smoker” Marchand, the local artist whose sculptures feature prominently at the site. The project included Marchand's art, landscaping and other streetscape improvements. The goal is to give hundreds of thousands of tourists, residents, business travelers and potential investors a great first impression as they enter Spokane. The revamped gateway begins a story about the community's relationship to our beloved Spokane River. Future art and improvements will continue to strengthen that storyline.

Just a short walk away, Mayor Condon and other City leaders were also on hand to help Baker Construction break ground on the Peppertree Plaza at 3rd Avenue and Division. The lot – another highly visible part of the gateway – sat empty for years. The installation of Mobile Murals around the spot was evidence of how strongly the community cared about the future of the site. Now, work has begun on a two-story mixed retail and office development at this well-traveled and important part of Spokane's core.

So if you haven't been to the area in a while, it's definitely worth paying a visit to see how the major gateway is rapidly transforming.
