Lincoln and Monroe set for final phase of improvements downtown

The Lincoln and Monroe Street couplet sees some of the heaviest traffic every day in Downtown Spokane, and it shows. Riding over a couple of the most deteriorated spots can almost feel more like surfing than driving at times.

Piece by piece, though, the City has been improving the corridor over the past couple construction seasons and rehabbing the roadway. Next year, more improvements are coming, this time from 2nd Avenue to Main.

The next phase of construction will be the final leg of work to improve Lincoln and Monroe. The scheduled work will include:

  • Full removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement
  • Replacement of aging water mains
  • Replacement of various storm drainage structures and lines
  • Private Utility (Avista, Century Link) improvements to underground utilities
  • Installation of ADA compliant wheelchair ramps
  • Minor sidewalk and curb repair

City crews began work on the Lincoln Monroe couplet back in 2014 and worked their way north in 2015. After next construction season, this major thoroughfare will really shine and drivers will feel the difference (in a good way!) from Downtown Spokane all the way up to the South Hill.
