Avista is upgrading street lighting within the City of Spokane

Many neighborhoods within the City of Spokane have seen their street lighting upgraded to include new LED lights that provide better light quality, last longer, and save energy.

Nearly 4,500 street lights owned by local utility provider, Avista Utilities, have been upgraded already, according to company representatives who provided a report to the City Council recently.

The remaining about 6,600 lights will be replaced over the next four years. In all, Avista will upgrade nearly 30,000 street lights in its service territory.

The LED lights replace high pressure sodium lights and use about 50 percent less energy and last two to three times longer. The LED light provides a whiter light than the high pressure sodium lights, giving a brighter appearance to the light.

If a City resident has a concern about the direction of placement of a specific light, he or she should call Avista Customer Service at (800) 227-9187 or send an email through the Contact Us section on the Avista web site at www.avistautilities.com.

Avista staff will evaluate the issue and provide possible solutions. Avista workers can check for proper installation otf the light, consider adding a shield to prevent light from shining directly into a resident's home, and check the mounting height of the light.
