Today about 20 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) students came to Fire Station 4 to learn how the city uses technology. The event featured city departments including, Spokane Public Library, Fire Department, Police Department, Water Department, and Communication. Each department came to teach us about the different type of technologies they use.

My favorite part of the event was the Bomb Squad. The Police Department showed off their bomb robot that has three cameras attached to it. SPD uses the robot when there is a suspicious package or container. The robot is wireless with a 24 volt battery allowing police officers to move the robot from inside their vehicle. The robot can reach and grab things, go up and down the stairs and stream/record videos. All officers in the Bomb Squad received six weeks of training from the FBI! Officers at today’s event, talked about their excitement when they get to use the bomb robot.

All of my peers were excited to come to this event to experience all of this technology and to learn about it. Many of us are interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math careers.
