Kate Burke

City Council Member, District 1
Term: 2018-2021
kateburke@spokanecity.org

Kate Burke is a Spokane native, born and raised in this fantastic city. She prides herself in her ability to take on challenges by identifying the core issues and finding practical solutions. One of her first ventures into community problem-solving started with her time as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, where she worked to bring fresh produce into local food banks and eventually started the Spokane Edible Tree Project, a non-profit that finds fruit and nut trees in Spokane County that have not been fully harvested. The Spokane Edible Tree Project has donated over 200,000 pounds of produce since it started in October 2013.

Her dedication to the community led Kate to work in partnership with many different City agencies and non-profit organizations. She saw how sometimes these agencies had a tendency to work in silos – unaware of what's happening in the next office over. The belief that someone can make a strong impact by simply finding the gaps in our system, connecting people with resources, and making Spokane more effective for its citizens is what inspired her to run for City Council.

Since being elected Councilwoman Burke has strived to make sure that everyone in our community has a voice, and not just those with power. She is a strong supporter of women, the arts, and increasing transit options, as well as ensuring equity for all people. She advocates for fair housing measures, affordable housing, citizen's rights, dignity and resources for those experiencing homelessness, and efficient government to make resources and funds more effective. She supports measures that lift the community up together. In order to encourage diverse voices and interests, Councilwoman Burke started a consultation business that finds and trains diverse leaders in how to run for office. She is invested in making change through policy and works tirelessly to make government work for the people.
