How Will This Project Impact Traffic? Traffic will be shifted on Maxwell (no detour) for the restriping work. Some side street connections to Maxwell (Cedar, Adams, Jefferson) will be temporarily closed to build the bump outs.

Why Is The City Doing This Project? This is a multi-modal safety project, and is meant to improve conditions for all users of the street. The conversion from four lanes to three lanes is a proven technique for reducing vehicle collisions by reducing vehicle weaving, as illustrated.

  • 4 Lane Section weaving Pattern

  • 3 Lane Section weaving Pattern

    3-lane section weaving pattern

The conversion also allows space for striping a bike lane along the corridor. The curb bumpouts effectively separate traffic from the sidewalk and parking areas, improving the conditions for walking.
