Pruning

All major pruning work performed on public trees, those trees planted in the city rights-of-way or the planting strip next to your property, needs to be performed by an ISA Certified Arborist licensed to do commercial tree work with the City of Spokane.

The arborist works with the property owner and applies for a no-cost Street Tree Permit from the City of Spokane Urban Forestry Program which is reviewed, approved or denied with recommendations made, and returned typically within 2 working days.

Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist and obtaining an approved street tree permit is critically important to protect public trees from improper pruning, planting, and unwarranted removals.

Review our Approved Street Tree List (PDF 537 KB)to learn more about tree selection and planting the right tree in the right place.

To learn more about proper pruning, read the International Society of Arboriculture's guidelines for Pruning Young Trees and guidelines for Pruning Mature Trees.
