Spokane Police Respond to Fatal Automobile-versus-Pedestrian Collision; Driver Arrested for Vehicular Homicide
On February 3, 2024 just after 7pm, Spokane police officers responded to the intersection of N Morton St and E Empire Ave in Northeast Spokane for a two-vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision.
The preliminary investigation indicates a 35-year-old female was crossing Empire Ave when she was struck by a vehicle traveling on that road. She fell onto the roadway, at which point she was struck by a second vehicle. Despite EMS personnel’s best efforts, the female was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her name will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The SPD Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene, as did Drug Recognition Experts from both SPD and the Washington State Patrol. Through their investigation, it was determined the driver of the first vehicle, Gary Thompson (70), was impaired. He was taken into custody for Vehicular Homicide. The driver of the other vehicle was not impaired. The investigation is ongoing.
If you witnessed this collision or have any further information and have not already spoken to law enforcement, please call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 and reference SPD case number 2024-20021661.
