Section 02.005.100 Council Legislative Assistants

 

  1. Each council member, including the council president, is authorized to hire a legislative assistant who shall be supervised and may be discharged by the council member at their sole discretion; provided, that the council, in consultation with the City Attorney and the Human Resources Department, and by majority vote, may establish uniform employment standards as are reasonably necessary to ensure the effective operation of individual council member offices within the legislative body. Notwithstanding the foregoing, each legislative assistant’s primary duty is to support, represent, and serve their employing council member’s office.
  1. No later than January 1, 2024, there shall be a legislative assistant II position that includes all of the responsibilities of a legislative assistant as well as additional skills and competencies that support the city council office as a whole. Those skills and competencies will be determined during the process of creating the job description, which will be led by the council president or their designee.
