Chapter 15.06 Preservation of Salvageable Materials

Section 15.06.020 Definitions
  1. "Deconstruction” means the systematic dismantling of a structure, typically in the opposite order it was constructed, in order to maximize the salvage of materials for reuse, in preference over salvaging materials for recycling, energy recovery, sending the materials to a landfill or the City’s Waste-to-Energy Facility.
  1. “Demolition” means the complete or partial removal of a structure from a site.
  1. “Period of Deconstruction” means the period beginning on the date the City issues a demolition permit with deconstruction requirements and ending on the date the City’s Historic Preservation Office approves the Post-Deconstruction Form.
  1. “Post-Deconstruction Form” means an inventory of materials salvaged for reuse or for donation, as well as materials disposed of by landfill or through the Waste-to-Energy Facility, completed after the deconstruction is complete.
  1. “Pre-Deconstruction Form” means a salvage plan which includes an inventory of materials to be salvaged for reuse or donation as part of a demolition permit requiring deconstruction.
  1. “Recycling” means the processing of waste materials into new products or material feedstock for products.
  1. Reuse” means the utilization of a product or material that was previously installed for the same or similar function to extend its life cycle. Materials salvageable for reuse include but are not limited to cabinets, doors, hardware, fixtures, flooring, siding, windows, and framing lumber.
  1. “Structure” means any building meeting the qualifications of SMC 15.06.030A.
