Title 17F Construction Standards
Chapter 17F.030 Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
Section 17F.030.110 Required Inspections
Every owner and operator of a boiler or pressure vessel must cause it to be inspected by the boiler inspector:
- upon installation;
- upon completion of repairs or alterations;
- in the case of a power boiler, internally and externally each year (approximately six months apart);
-
- In the case of a low-pressure heating boiler, externally biennially. In addition it must be inspected internally biennially except:
-
-
- where construction does not permit an internal inspection,
-
-
- a boiler using glycol or oil, or
-
-
- a boiler adequately treated with a corrosion inhibitor.
-
- In the case of a low-pressure steam boiler, as a minimum, a biennial internal inspection of the low water fuel cutoffs.
- in the case of an unfired pressure vessel, externally biennially. When construction permits a vessel subject to corrosion must, in addition, be inspected internally biennially. An ultrasound thickness gauge may be used in place of the internal inspection;
- by a hydrostatic pressure test or an accumulation test done by the operator in the presence of the inspector, whenever the inspector deems it necessary;
- the owner or user must prepare a boiler for internal inspection in the following manner, or as required by the inspector:
-
- water must be drawn off and the boiler thoroughly washed.
-
- all manhole and hand hole plates and wash-out plugs and water column connections must be removed and the furnace and combustion chambers thoroughly cooled and cleaned.
-
- all grates of internally fired boilers must be removed.
-
- at each annual inspection brickwork shall be removed as required by the inspector in order to determine the condition of the boiler headers, furnace, supports, or other parts.
-
- the steam gauge must be removed for testing or evidence of testing must be shown.
-
- any leakage of steam or hot water into the boiler must be cut off by disconnecting the pipe or valve at the most convenient point.
-
- the low-water cutout must be disassembled to such a degree as the inspector may require.
- the owner or user must prepare an unfired pressure vessel for inspection to the extent deemed necessary by the inspector.
