Chapter 17F.030 Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

Section 17F.030.080 Installation – Clearance at Top of Boilers

When boilers are replaced or new boilers installed in either existing or new buildings, a minimum clearance as specified below must be provided between the top of the boiler proper and ceiling.

  1. For power boilers having a steam-generating capacity in excess of five thousand pounds per hour, or a heating surface in excess of one thousand square feet, or input in excess of five million BTU per hour, the clearance is seven feet.
  2. For:

    1. low-pressure heating boilers which exceed any one of the following limits:

      1. five million BTU input,

      2. five thousand pounds steam per hour capacity or one thousand square feet heating surface, and

    2. power boilers which do not exceed any of the following limits:

      1. five million BTU input,

      2. five thousand pounds steam per hour capacity or one thousand square feet heating surface, and

    3. all boilers with manholes on top of the boiler, except those described in subsection (A) of this section, the clearance is three feet.
       
  3. For low-pressure heating boilers which do not exceed the above limits and miniature boilers, the clearance is two feet.
