Section 17F.070.200 Interior Stairways
- Every interior stairway must be enclosed with walls of at least one-hour fire-resistive construction, except that where existing partitions form part of a stairwell enclosure, wood lath and plaster in good condition is an acceptable substitute.
- Enclosure must include landings between flights and all corridors, passageways and public rooms necessary for continuous exit to the outside.
- Doorways to required enclosures must be protected by a self-closing door equivalent to a solid wood door at least one and three-quarters inch thick with a two-inch nominal wood frame and rabbeted jamb.
- A stairway need not be enclosed, subject to approval:

- in a continuous shaft if cut off at each story by fire-resistive construction as is required for stairwell enclosure; or
-
- when the building has an approved automatic fire extinguishing system with sprinkler heads centered on both sides of every door entering an exit.
