Chapter 17F.070 Existing Building and Conservation Code

Section 17F.070.240 Fire Escapes

1. An existing fire escape may be used as one means of exit, subject to approval, if:

1. 1. maintained in a safe condition;

1. 2. the pitch does not exceed sixty degrees;

1. 3. the width is at least eighteen inches;

1. 4. the treads are at least four inches wide;

1. 5. it extends to the ground or has counterbalanced stairs which reach the ground.

2. An opening giving access must have a minimum net clear opening of nine square feet, the smallest dimension being at least twenty-nine inches.

3. A window giving egress or rescue must have a finished sill height of no more than thirty-six inches above the floor.
