Section 17D.100.020 Historic Landmarks and Districts – Designation

Generally a building, structure, object, site or district which is more than fifty (50) years old or determined to be exceptionally significant in an architectural, historical or a cultural manner may be designated an historic landmark or historic district if it has significant character, interest, or value as a part of the development, heritage or cultural characteristics of the city, county, state or nation. The property must also possess integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and association and must fall into one or more of the following categories:

Property is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of the history of the city, county, state or nation; or

Property is associated with the lives of persons significant in the history of the city, county, state or nation; or
-
Property embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction or represents the work of a master, or possesses high artistic values, or represents a significant and distinguishable entity whose components lack individual distinction;

Property has yielded, or is likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history; or
-
A property that represents the culture and heritage of the city of Spokane in ways not adequately addressed in the other criteria, as in its visual prominence, reference to intangible heritage, or any range of cultural practices.

An area within Spokane may be designated as an Spokane Register Historic District according to the process described in SMC 17D.100.030 – 17D.100.110.
