Spokane Mayor David Condon issued the following statement regarding Judge Moreno's decision to remove the proposed initiatives from the ballot:
“I have great respect for the initiative process and appreciate the passionate debate about the proposed initiatives. The conversation is good for the community, especially as we consider important issues shaping Spokane's future.
Judge Moreno's decision affirmed my concerns that the proposed initiatives were outside the scope of the initiative power, and maintained the integrity of the process. Her ruling is consistent with prior court decisions resulting from similar initiatives in other Washington communities. This result best serves the long-term interests of our community.”
