Council Member Michael Cathcart has issued the following statement:
“The Spokane City Council’s proposal to increase taxes across Spokane is misguided during this time of inflation and looming recession. I continue to hear from families and individuals across Spokane who are struggling to afford our rising cost of living, including just making rent or mortgage payments.
According to Spokane County Assessor Tom Konis, this year’s property tax increase is among the largest in his 29 year history with the office. On average, property taxes have risen thirty percent. Seniors in our community and those on fixed incomes are continuing to struggle to stay in their homes. The reality is any legislation intensifying the burden on financially vulnerable community members should not be considered.
Working families, individuals and businesses deserve representation and transparency. With gas higher than it’s ever been, housing costs at record levels and food more expensive, this is not the time to raise taxes. I will not vote to adopt the annual property tax increase.
I have been contacted by citizens who are perennially in favor of tax increases for increased services and amenities but are demanding the City scrutinize how current tax revenue is spent. This is an issue of responsible governance, therefore, I believe there are alternative pathways to curb spending and conserve taxpayer resources.”
