There will not be a Fall Leaf Festival or Compost Fair at the Finch Arboretum this October, but you can still learn about composting fall leaves. The Spokane County Master Composters/Recyclers are bringing their Fall Compost Fair to the public in a virtual event. Through a self-paced online format, county residents can get great home composting tips and earn a free compost bin!
The virtual event will take place on the learning platform LearnWorlds. Participants will need to go the city’s solid waste online training page and create a log-in and password. Once the event launches on Saturday, Oct. 9 (not before), participants can enroll in the Virtual Fall Compost Fair 2021 class and watch videos, read provided materials and take a very short quiz to demonstrate their new composting knowledge. Students will have until Saturday, Oct. 23 to complete the class.
Once the quiz is passed, a coupon good for one free compost bin can be downloaded and redeemed. You must be a Spokane County resident to get the free compost bin. IDs will be checked at pick up and there is a limit of one per household. Coupons can be redeemed at the Waste to Energy Facility’s Administration Building, 2900 S. Geiger Boulevard between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 through Friday, Oct. 29 or by special arrangement. Due to health concerns and the need for social distancing, this event will be the only opportunity residents can earn a free compost bin this fall.
