Willow Tree Survey Complete

City of Spokane Parks & Recreation has completed a survey asking the public what they would like to see happen with Finch Arboretum’s 78-year-old willow tree after it succumbed to gravity and old age earlier this year.

Finch Arboretum’s 78-year-old willow tree succumbed to gravity and old age earlier this year.

Over 1,000 people participated in the survey, with 65% of respondents saying they would like to see a nature-based playground using willow wood components, and plant replacement tree(s) from the cuttings of the original tree. Students from Spokane Community College’s Greenhouse/Nursery program are already generously growing 100 trees from cuttings off the special tree.

Interested community members can look forward to seeing concepts for this nature-based play area in the coming months. A timeline for construction will be determined once funding becomes available. Those who wish to contribute to its construction can donate through the Spokane Parks Foundation.

In the meantime, the public is invited to share their willow tree photos and memories to be included in a photo mosaic for future display at the arboretum. Submit your photos for the mosaic!
