Business Licensing and Property Registration Open House

The City of Spokane has implemented many aspects of the new ordinance, which was passed in March of 2023. The property registration portal launched in December of 2023 and proactive inspections began in May of 2024. As the teams near the end of the first full year of operating this new program, we have fielded countless inquiries and requests from citizens for clarity and assistance in complying with various aspects of the programs. Primarily, these inquiries have focused on technical questions regarding the business licensing, property registration and inspections processes.

In response to this, and in an attempt to further outreach and engagement opportunities for this program, the Washington State Department of Revenue and City of Spokane teams have collaborated to coordinate an open house, specifically focused on these topics. The primary goal of this open house will be providing customer service and assistance in efforts to comply with business licensing, property registration and inspections regulations in the new program.

Where: Washington State Department of Revenue - 1330 N Washington St., Suite 5600. This is in the Rock Pointe Corporate Center, Building 3.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 18, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Department of Revenue, City of Spokane Code Enforcement, and City of Spokane Taxes and Licenses staff will be present throughout the entire day, and those interested will have access to all of these team members, and this event is planned to be a one-stop shop to have the ability to complete all needed steps and have access to the teams implementing these programs.

As a reminder, the ordinance requires all owners and operators of long-term residential rental housing to obtain a business license through the Department of Revenue $50 and that license must contain a City of Spokane endorsement $131. In addition to obtaining a business license, the rental properties must be registered with the City of Spokane, where property and contact information is provided. The property registration process includes payment of an annual $15 per-unit fee. The property registration portion of the program is an annual process built around the calendar year. All properties must be registered by December 31, 2024, for the 2025 calendar year. The fees were implemented to resource the program.
