Celebrating Courage and Dedication: SFD Awards

The Spokane Fire Department recently celebrated a series of well-deserved promotions and commendations, recognizing individuals who exemplify leadership, technical expertise, and dedication to service. Several firefighters advanced into key operational and supervisory roles, including Fire Equipment Operators Aaron Peterson, Ben Olberding, and Chris Langus, as well as Lieutenants Eric Regalado and Joseph Danon. Captain Kurt Vande Vanter and Battalion Chief Jon Stevens were also honored for their leadership advancements. These promotions highlight the department’s strong foundation of experience and mentorship, ensuring the next generation of officers is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Alongside promotions, the department proudly recognized extraordinary acts of bravery and skill through the Medal of Valor and Special Unit Citation awards.

Medal of Valor
Firefighter Nick Ulowetz was awarded the Medal of Valor for his selfless actions during a rope rescue where two children were trapped on a collapsing cliffside. Firefighter Jeff Hansen also received the Medal of Valor after rescuing a trapped victim from a house fire under extreme heat and smoke conditions, ultimately saving the man’s life. Paramedic partner Baylee MacGregor from AMR was presented with a life-saving award for performing a critical surgical procedure on-scene that gave another fire victim a chance at survival.

Special Unit Citations
Teamwork was also celebrated, with Special Unit Citations awarded to Engine 11 and Truck 14 for their smooth coordination during a house fire on May 8, 2025. Engine 11, led by Captain Chris Maehren, FEO Bradly Bowers, and Firefighter Eli Francovich, mounted an aggressive fire attack that enabled Truck 14, staffed by Lt. Gabe Mills, FEO Brian Turpen, and Firefighters Jeff Hanson and Ryan Finneran, to complete the successful rescue of a critically injured victim.

These honors highlight the Spokane Fire Department’s ongoing commitment to courage, collaboration, and excellence in protecting our community.
