10 Ways to Make Holiday Gifting Low-Waste

The holidays sparkle with joy, lights... and, unfortunately, a whole lot of trash. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Americans create about 1 million extra tons of waste, including nearly 4 million pounds of tossed gift wrap and shopping bags. Add in plastic packaging that sticks around longer than fruitcake, and it’s clear our celebrations could use a little cleanup.

But there’s a brighter side – mindful giving. Choosing reusable, low-waste, or experience-based gifts keeps the fun while cutting the clutter. The holidays should be about spreading cheer – not trash.

  1. Go Green, Give a Plant
A little green goes a long way! Gift a leafy friend, potted herb, or mini succulent garden – it’s the kind of gift that keeps on growing.
  2. Classes
Skip the gadgets and give a skill! Try pottery, dance, cooking, painting, or even a paddleboard lesson. Spokane has plenty of options to explore a new hobby and make lasting memories.
  3. Wellness
Self-care for the win! Spa gift cards, yoga passes, or handmade bath salts are perfect for helping loved ones slow down and unwind.
  4. The Gift of Music
Give memories, not stuff! Treat someone to concert tickets, a night at the symphony, or a local open-mic show. Bonus points for a homemade playlist to set the mood!
  5. Time and Talent
Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned coupon book? Offer babysitting, snow shoveling, and home-cooked meals; your time is the most personal gift of all. Massage anyone?
  6. Edible Love
Bread, chocolate, coffee beans, brews – need we say more? Add a personal touch with homemade jam, local honey, or a “snack attack” basket of Spokane favorites.
  7. Secondhand & Vintage Treasures
Give something with a story! Thrifted finds, upcycled goods, or repaired gems are not only sustainable but one-of-a-kind. Bonus: no one else will have it!
  8. Get Creative
Make something from the heart! A batch of cookies, a knitted scarf, or a piece of art shows you care – no packaging required.
  9. Theatre
Give the gift of drama (the good kind)! Check out Spokane’s local theatres for upcoming shows – from improv to Shakespeare, there’s something for everyone!
  10. Refillable & Reusable
The practical gift for the practical person. Think sleek water bottles, refillable candles, or locally made bulk goods. It’s sustainability wrapped in style!
