A fire in the basement of a northwest Spokane home Friday afternoon briefly displaced a family from their home. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was reported at 2:30 pm at 1003 West Kiernan. Companies arrived to find a basement fire in a single-family wood framed house. Crews entered thorough the daylight basement door.

Initial reports were that there was a wheelchair bound occupant still in the home. Companies completed a primary search and found only a cat still in the home and all occupants accounted for.

Crew remained on scene for approximately one and a half hours with southbound Monroe blocked by fire trucks. No injuries were reported.

The family is back occupying the home at this time. Damage was estimated at $7,000. A total of 22 firefighters were called to the home.
