At approximately 0630 hours on Monday March 21, Spokane Engine 3 was dispatched to the Jolly Mart in Spokane's West Central neighborhood to check on an unknown rubbish fire. Upon the arrival of Engine 3, the officer in charge observed a large plie of rubbish as well as a natural gas meter on fire. The fire was next to and appeared to be extending into the Jolly Mart. The SFD officer in charge requested a full assignment of SFD (Spokane Fire Department) apparatus be dispatched to the incident. Given the potential of incident escalation due to the fire involvement of the gas meter, a total of 26 firefighters and Command Staff were assigned to the incident.
SFD crews quickly extinguished the fire, confirmed the Jolly Mart and surrounding structures were completely evacuated and were able to shut off the flow of natural gas from the fire damaged meter.
Damage to the Jolly Mart was limited to the exterior of the building.
Avista arrived on scene to assess and correct the damage to the gas meter and associated components.
There were no reported injuries the civilians or firefighters.
SFD SIU (Special Investigation Unit) was on scene to determine the cause of the fire. There was no reported cause at the time of this release.
