Spokane, WA – At approximately 8:03 this morning, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the 1900 Block of East Marshall Avenue on a report of a possible house fire. The initial reports from Spokane Fire Communications stated that the initial caller described her home as filling with smoke and fire in the attic. The first company arrived less than five minutes after notification and reported large amounts of dark brown smoke from the top floor of a one and 1/2 story craftsman-style home. Nine occupants, four adults and five children, could make it out safely before Fire Department's arrival. Spokane firefighters quickly entered the structure to begin a coordinated fire attack and search of the residence to ensure all occupants were safely out.

Firefighters were positioned on the roof to ventilate the structure, improve interior conditions, and remove heat. High heat and fire conditions were discovered on the top floor, with fire rapidly spreading through the structural members. The fire was contained within 20 minutes after arrival. Ten fire apparatus and 28 firefighters responded to fight the fire. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Spokane Fire Special Investigation Unit.
