Southeast Boulevard Apartment Fire

On June 24, 2023, at 3:38 PM, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) and Fire District 8 were dispatched to an apartment fire in the 2200 block of South Southeast Boulevard. The first companies arrived within five minutes and found a working fire on the backside of a three-story apartment building. Flames were extending from a second-floor balcony, which had already broken glass in a sliding door, and began spreading dense smoke and fire into the second and third floors.

All firefighters from the first alarm were needed to simultaneously attack the fire on the exterior of the building while also searching the structure and extinguishing the fire that had spread to adjacent areas. Firefighters from SFD and District 8 worked side-by-side to skilfully confine the blaze to the floor of origin, preventing it from consuming more of the structure and the occupant's property.

The building was searched by firefighters in less than five minutes, and the fire was extinguished in just 15 minutes. One civilian injury occurred and was treated by SFD Paramedics. The civilian was not transported to the hospital.

The firefighter's efforts saved over $800,000 of property and contents. The cause of the fire was cooking on the apartment's deck area too close to combustibles.

  1. Check your building's regulations: Before barbecuing on your apartment deck, review the building's rules and regulations regarding grilling. 
  2. Maintain a safe distance: Position your barbecue grill safely from flammable materials, including walls, railings, overhanging eaves, and other combustible items. 
  3. Use a stable and secure grill: Invest in a durable, well-maintained barbecue grill suitable for apartment decks. Ensure it is in good working condition, with no leaks, cracks, or other defects. Stable grills reduce the chances of tipping or falling, minimizing the potential for injuries or property damage.
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  5. Supervise the grill at all times: Never leave a lit barbecue grill unattended on your apartment deck. 
  6. Properly dispose of ashes: After use, allow the ashes to cool completely before disposing of them. Place the ashes in a metal container designed for ash disposal, and keep it away from flammable materials. Never dispose of hot or smoldering ashes in plastic bags; they can ignite and cause a fire.
  7. Be cautious of windy conditions: Wind can significantly increase the risk of accidents and spreading fire. Avoid barbecuing on windy days, or take extra precautions if you must grill during such conditions. Place a wind guard or screen around the grill to mitigate the impact of wind on the flames.
  8. Be mindful of smoke and odors: Remember that your neighbors may have sensitivities or health concerns related to smoke and strong odors.
