SPOKANE, WA, June 18, 2025 - At approximately 3:45 p.m. yesterday, while providing mutual aid for a wildfire in the 6300 block of South Cheney Spokane Road, Battalion 1 observed a prominent smoke column rising to the south. Recognizing the potential threat, he promptly requested a wildland response to investigate the source.

Within ten minutes, crews arrived in the 2900 block of West Thorpe Road, where they discovered a grass and brush fire burning under an acre in size within a timbered area. Firefighters from the Spokane Fire Department, supported by resources from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Spokane County Fire District 10, quickly engaged the fire.

Thanks to the coordinated response, the fire was contained, and firefighters began mopping up hot spots just over an hour after their arrival.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is considered suspicious. Investigators are seeking information regarding a dark-colored Ford Ranger with noticeable items in its bed. This vehicle was seen leaving the area shortly after the fire was reported.

Anyone with information about the fire or the vehicle in question is urged to contact Crime Check at 509.456.2233.
