At 10:17 a.m. today, firefighters were dispatched to People’s Park, located in the 2900 block of West Riverside Drive, following reports of a grass fire near the parking lot. Engine 3 arrived on scene within six minutes and found a 100-by-100-foot area of grass and shrubs actively burning.
Additional resources, including crews from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, responded quickly and brought the fire under control within 20 minutes of arrival.
This fire is being investigated as suspicious. Witnesses reported seeing a person of interest in the area at the time of the fire: a white male, approximately in his mid-60s to mid-70s, driving an orange sedan – possibly a KIA.
