At 8:18 p.m. yesterday, firefighters were dispatched to 101 North Madelia Street following multiple reports of black smoke coming from a warehouse. Engine 7, responding from the East Central neighborhood, arrived within three minutes and confirmed heavy, dark smoke pouring from every window and door of the two-story commercial structure.

A quick interior assessment revealed the fire was too advanced for an offensive attack, requiring crews to shift immediately to a defensive strategy. As additional units arrived, the primary objective became containing the fire to the building of origin. Crews faced significant hazards, including sizable fuel tank storage directly north of the property, an impending structural collapse with bulging walls and roof failure, and numerous surrounding powerlines.

The incident escalated to a third alarm, and it took about two hours to bring the fire under control. Despite the effort, the warehouse was a total loss. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among firefighters or the public. The cause is still under investigation, but a partial building collapse will likely prevent an interior examination. Fire crews will remain on scene throughout the day to extinguish hot spots, support investigators, and ensure the fire does not rekindle. Residents should expect smoke in the neighborhood during this time.

We extend our gratitude to our partners at the Spokane Valley Fire Department, Spokane County Fire District 8, and Spokane County Fire District 9 for assisting with suppression efforts and providing city coverage during the incident.
