The City of Spokane Fire Department, SAFE Kids Spokane, the Downtown Spokane Partnership, River Park Square, and Nom Nom are partnering for the annual Kids Junior Fire Academy.

This free, family-friendly event will be held at River Park Square and on Post Street in downtown Spokane on Saturday, September 13th, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“We all have that special kid in our life who dreams of becoming a firefighter. This is your chance to make their dream come true,” stated Spokane Fire Department Community Risk Reduction Manager Jamie McIntyre. “Our partners are essential to the success of this event. We’re excited that Nom Nom will be joining us again this year, offering a sweet treat for kids as they earn their official Jr Firefighter status,” McIntyre continued.

Junior Fire Academy is an excellent opportunity for kids and families to experience what it is like to be a firefighter while learning important safety information.

The Kids Junior Fire Academy is open to “kids” of all ages, and will provide an opportunity for attendees to tour and see demonstrations from a fire truck and fire engine, talk about wildfire safety, learn hands-only CPR, make a fire-themed craft with Mobius, operate a charged fire hose, take a photo with Sparky the Fire Safety Dog, learn about child passenger safety from SAFE Kids Spokane, talk about Poison Safety with Mr. Yuk and Washington Poison Control and so much more! Families are encouraged to look out for Spokane’s Arson Dog, Chardonnay, and her partner, Jared, who will be showcasing her skills with live demonstrations throughout the event. Kids can collect stamps at each activity and receive a Jr. Firefighter certificate and a sweet treat, compliments of Nom Nom.

Families can participate in an optional scavenger hunt offered in partnership with PBS. They’ll visit six stations around the Jr Fire Academy events to solve a fire safety riddle. Kids can showcase their completed worksheets to pick a prize.

Media are welcome to come down before for a behind-the-scenes story or capture the event day-of.
