The City of Spokane is seeking applicants to fill the Spokane Municipal Court seat that will be vacated next month by Judge Shelley Szambelan, who has been appointed to the Spokane County Superior Court bench.
Application materials to fill Szambelan’s unexpired term through 2021 are due by close of business on March 12. A letter of interest and resume can be submitted to human resources on the fourth floor of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., in person, by mail or via email at gkinyon@spokanecity.org. Applicants must be a resident of Spokane County and member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association.
A screening panel of community members and city staff will review applicant materials and recommend a group of finalists. A panel of community members and city staff will interview the finalists and submit its recommendations to Spokane Mayor David Condon, who will appoint a nominee to be confirmed by the City Council.
“Judge Szambelan has served the city well during her nine years on the bench as an advocate of balancing individual accountability and offender rehabilitation,” Condon said. “She leaves big shoes to fill and we are excited for her new opportunity with the county.”
Finalists will interview with the panel during the day on March 22 and at a 90-minute community forum at the East Central Community Center. Each candidate will give an opening statement before moving into small group discussions to give forum attendees a chance to interact more closely with the candidates. Forum attendees will be encouraged to circulate among the candidates and to provide input to the Mayor’s Office.
