Crews finished the concrete grind and overlay and joint repair project of the Maple Street Bridge late Thursday, Nov. 2. The project started Aug. 27 and was completed within the estimated 10-week timeframe. Portions of the project’s work were done during overnight hours and when possible, one lane of traffic was opened for access outside of working hours to provide access to the heavily traveled bridge.

“The Maple St. Bridge experiences some of our highest traffic levels in the City, and we knew this was going to be a pain point for drivers,” says Public Works Director Marlene Feist. “We are thrilled to have been able to replace the surface and also make critical joint repairs to give the bridge decades of life and safe travel.”

The $4.7 million project involved grinding and removing approximately three-quarters of an inch of the deck surface and replacing it with polyester concrete. The specialized product has a high level of bonding ability with the concrete deck foundation and increases structural capacity.

In addition to a new surface, engineers identified joints that needed to be repaired and reinforced. This additional work was able to be done within the window of the project timeline and will reduce future closures for needed repairs and maintenance.

Fast Facts:

  • Approximately 45,000 vehicles cross the four-lane, 1,708-foot bridge daily
  • Original construction cost was $6 million, took two years to build, and opened in July 1958
  • Built as a toll bridge originally that required payment for use was discontinued in 1990
