During Monday night’s Legislative Session, the City Council approved an interim zoning ordinance to eliminate building height limits in downtown Spokane. This ordinance will allow for other economic development, which will enhance the city's vitality and create varied housing, job opportunities, and overall revitalization of downtown.

“I am pleased that Council voted to take such an essential and creative step in moving our city forward,” said Council Member Jonathan Bingle, sponsor for the ordinance and District 1 representative.  “More jobs, more businesses, more diverse housing, all things that will contribute to the vitality of our city and make for a dynamic Downtown Spokane. I am thankful for the Mayor and her staff for their partnership in getting this done.”

"I am grateful to our Council Sponsor Jonathan Bingle and his co-sponsors Council Members Zappone and Klitzke, as well as our esteemed Planning Department, for their initiative and input in crafting this legislation,” said Mayor Lisa Brown. “Passing this interim ordinance paves the way for an increased housing supply and creates new opportunities for economic development. This is a win for our residents, businesses, and the future of Spokane."

The ordinance will go into effect immediately and will stay in effect until September 24, 2025. In the meantime, the City of Spokane will continue to study development potential and growth opportunities in Downtown Spokane as part of the Periodic Update to the Comprehensive Plan, which will continue until next year.
