The City of Spokane is celebrating Earth Day throughout the whole month of April. Several City departments are organizing and participating in activities to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage action to protect the planet. The City has put together a convenient list of opportunities and resources for the community to get involved through Spokane Public Library, City Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Planning Services, and Office of Neighborhood Services.

“Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and the role each of us plays,” said Mayor Lisa Brown. “I appreciate that our City operations contribute to protecting our environment every day, and provide resources and opportunities for the community too.”

There are volunteer opportunities, water conservation events, clean up events, books to read, learning activities, and much more to honor Earth Day the entire month of April and year-round.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and by December of the same year, the movement led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. The work has contributed significant changes in our environmental history such as the Clean Air Act, lead-based paint restrictions, banning dangerous chemical pesticides, the Clean Water Act, the Energy Star Program, and many more milestones in more than 50 years.
