Councilmember Amber Waldref issued the following statement today about the decision by the STA board to place a funding proposal on the ballot in November. The statement is as follows:
“With today’s decision by the STA board to place a ballot measure before voters in November, I do not believe there is a need for the City Council to pursue a city-only transit option at this time. In January, the Council voted to support a regional transit funding solution that would restore service that was lost during the recession and enhance service for most of the county, including many of the area’s small cities. A resolution passed last week by the Council allowing the city to potentially use sales tax and vehicle licensing fees for public transportation created flexibility in the event the need arose to look at other options. That is no longer necessary after today’s vote. I want to thank the STA board for working diligently to find a compromise and to place a regional measure before voters that will be a lower sales tax option.”
