Council Member Lili Navarrete of District 2 issued the following statement in response to recent racist posters in Downtown Spokane:
“I have become aware of a local hate group that has been spreading racist sentiments around Spokane. These hate-themed flyers will not be tolerated. This hate rhetoric and propaganda is a personal attack on myself, my family, and our community. It serves as a reminder that we still have a long way to go in the fight against discrimination, and to stay silent only perpetuates the problem. I am aware that some people may not view these posters as an issue but to deny it is part of the problem.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the cultural events that we have been hosting at City Hall and to reassure you all that these racist sentiments do not reflect the views of our City officials. I invite the community to come to City Hall and show that, in Spokane, we all belong.”
