Walkers, runners and cyclists who live and work in northeast Spokane helped the Washington State Department of Transportation open a new section of the Children of the Sun Trail today. The Freya Street Trailhead features parking and access to the newest section of trail, which extends from Frey Street to Market Street.

The trail is a tremendous asset to an area with an amazing history and bright future. The City of Spokane has identified this area as important for redevelopment. A partnership that includes city, business and neighborhood representatives has secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grant funding to develop a plan to leverage the industrial and distribution legacy of this area known as The Yard.

The Yard is one of six target investment areas identified by the Economic Investment Program, a partnership with the City Council to support job creation, public benefit, industry cluster advancement and investment in geographic priority areas. The goal is to encourage catalytic investment that drives future economic vitality.

Opening a new section of the Children of the Sun Trail is a great complement to the critical infrastructure and business investment.
