With the diligent effort to select Spokane's next police chief well underway, the Spokane Police Division will see a transition in leadership as it continues its important work to make Spokane the safest city of its size.

Interim Chief Rick Dobrow, who has led SPD admirably since taking over leadership of the division, is retiring March 1. Rick Dobrow has served Spokane with a dedication, compassion and professionalism that we should all strive for. His 33-year career in law enforcement includes 21 years with SPD. He has been honored with the Medal of Valor (2002), Chief's Citation (2003), and Purple Heart (2007). He had made plans to retire in 2016 long ago, and felt it was the right time to take this decision for him and his family.

Following Chief Dobrow's retirement, I have appointed former U.S. Attorney Jim McDevitt to oversee the division as Law Enforcement Director. His experience and expertise will help guide SPD during the national search for a permanent chief.

While I will miss Chief Dobrow's calming presence and his professionalism, I know we are transitioning leadership at SPD into capable hands. Thank you, Chief Dobrow, for your service in making Spokane the City of Choice.
