The City of Spokane is always looking for new ways to make our streets last longer.

That’s why the Spokane Streets Department is testing a new product called GlasPave along Indiana Avenue.

That’s where crews are working on a grind and overlay project.

They’ve ground out two inches of damaged asphalt but before laying down new pavement, crews are rolling out a layer of GlasPave.

The GlasPave fabric is made out of fiberglass and intended to reduce the formation of cracks in the new layer of asphalt.

Some cracks extend all the way down to the roadbed and GlasPave is supposed to keep those defects from reappearing in the new asphalt overlay.

Streets supervisors explain GlasPave is like “Under Armour” for new pavement.

If the GlasPave works as advertised, it could help prevent new cracks from opening and subjecting streets to our free-thaw weather patterns that can trigger potholes.

The City’s Streets Department will be rating GlasPave’s performance on an annual basis.
