Soryanna Taylor, a 13-year-old student from Sacajawea Middle School, is the winner of the 2020 Student Designed Wastewater Access Cover Art Contest. Soryanna’s design features references to the Spokane River, fish, and the sun.
Soryanna will be recognized during the 6 p.m. City Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 24. She will receive $100 and tickets to the Blue Zoo Aquarium in NorthTown Mall. Her design, meanwhile, will be cast and used starting this summer in locations throughout the City.

The runner-up is Kauã Roberton, age 14, also from Sacagewea Middle School. Kauã will receive $50 and tickets to the Blue Zoo as well. Other finalists will be recognized in The Spokesman Review newspaper.
The contest was sponsored by the City, Spokane Arts, The Lands Council, and The Spokesman Review. The project’s intent is to enhance the visual appearance of the City of Spokane wastewater access covers. Designs were to be reflective of the ecology, water, nature, creatures or landscape of the Inland Northwest. This is the third student art contest for these covers; previous contests were run in 2010 and 2015.
The City installs or replaces 100 to 200 wastewater access covers a year. There is no extra cost to the City to have the covers sport a different design. Wastewater access covers can last 50 years or more so the winning artist will help beautify our community for many years.
