Every January, the City of Spokane celebrates the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s celebration will look different but the day is as important as ever.
Spokane City Council Member Betsy Wilkerson along with City staff will host a virtual “Talk Back” discussion in honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, Jan. 13. The virtual event will start at 3:45 p.m. with Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, followed by the panel discussion at 4 p.m.
You can watch live on the City’s website, Spokane City Council Facebook page, and on CityCable 5, channels 5 and 325 on the Comcast cable system in Spokane. If you would like to participate, you can sign up on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The panel will include Council Member Wilkerson, Spokane Public Schools Board President Jerrall Haynes, Washington State University Associate Director of Equity Leadership Shantell Jackson, and Jackie Gaither, vice president of the Gonzaga University Black Student Union. It will be moderated by the Cupid Alexander, the City’s Director of Neighborhoods, Housing, and Human Services, and Alex Gibilisco, the City Council’s Manager of Equity and Inclusion Initiatives.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is known as a day of service to the community—“A Day On, Not a Day Off.” The MLK Jr. Family Outreach Center has compiled a list of MLK Day 2021 Service Projects. You can also sign up for volunteer and service opportunities at www.volunteerspokane.org.
The MLK Jr. Family Outreach Center also created a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Book List for your kids! Most of the books are available for checkout at the Spokane Public Library.
