Transitions Continues to Serve

Transitions’ Women’s Hearth first opened in 1993 with the goal of providing a safe place for women experiencing homelessness—safe from the freezing cold and the severe heat, and, most of all, safe from abusers.

Today, in 2021, Women’s Hearth continues that tradition, offering safety and support to all age 18 and up who identify as women, although certainly it looks different during a pandemic…

In spite of COVID-19, Women’s Hearth continues to be open for a few women at a time to come in each day, protecting them from the extreme weather and a harsh reality. Mostly, though, the Hearth provides for many of the differing basic needs of women in our community:

  • Recently, a woman came in after her bag had been stolen the night before. Her whole life and identity had vanished overnight. Staff at Women’s Hearth gave her a fresh change of clothes, some needed supplies, and helped her on the path to a new ID card.
  • The other day, the Hearth simply provided a woman with a shower, an interview outfit, and a place to store her stuff during a job interview. No word back yet on the job, but we’re hopeful!
  • And with a lot of folks cold and hungry this winter, a warm breakfast sandwich at the door of Women’s Hearth has come at the right time for many.
  • Finding available, affordable housing right now feels impossible, but with the help and advocacy of the Housing Support Specialists at Women’s Hearth, about 30 women were housed in 2020!

It’s been an especially challenging year for all of us; nevertheless, Transitions’ Women’s Hearth served 887 women in 2020 in a variety of ways, big and small. Each woman’s step into the Hearth turns into loving support and a hopeful safety net in the midst of unimaginable hardship.

If you want to help the women of the Hearth, you can donate hotel-sized shampoo and conditioner, gloves, chapstick, and deodorant, and drop off at the Hearth during the hours listed below. Additionally, you can donate financially to Transitions at www.help4women.org, just click on the “Invest” button. And, please, keep the staff and participants in your hearts and thoughts as we all continue to traverse this unknown landscape together.
