Did you know that Comstock Park is named after James Comstock? He is known for starting Spokane Dry Goods which later became the Crescent department store and for serving as mayor of the City of Spokane. His daughter, Josie Shadle, paying tribute to her parents, used a portion of her inheritance to purchase the land that has become this beautiful park and pool. Comstock was the first public pool in the city.

Well, if you didn’t know, now you know!

This month’s video features the Vice Chair of the Comstock Neighborhood Council, Elizabeth Goldsmith encouraging you to join your neighborhood council!

The Comstock Neighborhood Council meets every month on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. The next meeting is May 21st, and Dr. Adam Swinyard, Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools, and Garrett Jones, Director of Spokane Parks and Recreation will discuss the Together Spokane initiative. If you can’t make it to a meeting, find the neighborhood council at Summer Parkways on Tuesday, June 17, at a summer concert series at Rocket Market or on Labor Day at the 40th anniversary of the Symphony in Comstock Park.

The District 2 Neighborhood City Council Town Hall is scheduled for Monday, June 9 at 6 p.m. at the MLK Community Center. This event is open to everyone but specifically geared toward District 2 residents.

It's the Year of the Neighborhood! Thank you to all those who could attend the Lilac City Live in April for the launch of our This is Spokane, A Civic Guide for Neighbors zine! You can also view a digital copy of the zine on the ONS website or pick it up at the 311 Spokane desk in City Hall or at any Spokane Public Library!

A quick reminder for Neighborhood Councils that your Community Engagement Grant applications are due by Monday, June 16.

The Spokane Neighborhood Summit is back for a third year and looking for workshop presenters. If you are interested in presenting at the Summit on Saturday, Oct. 25, see the 2025 Call for Workshop Proposals handout on the ONS website.
