Preserving Our Parks: Featuring Lee Williams-Spokane Park Board Member

This week, in honor of Spokane Gives, we are highlighting a champion of Spokane’s Parks system. Lee Williams is both a member of the Spokane Parks Board and is involved with The Friends of Coeur D’Alene Park group. She continues to be an example on what it means to be a steward to park land, and encourages folks to get involved by starting their own “Friends of ____ Park” groups.

About the Spokane Park Board:
The Spokane Park Board was created in 1910 and granted power by Article V of the City Charter to layout, establish, purchase, procure, accept and have the care, management, control, and improvement of all parks grounds and parkways controlled by the City of Spokane and used for park purposes.

About the Friends of Coeur D'Alene Park:
Founded in 2013, The Friends of Coeur d'Alene Park is an all-volunteer group committed to the restoration and maintenance of the parks and public spaces in Browne's Addition. Our mission is to stimulate public participation and facilitate historic and ongoing preservation and improvement of Browne's Addition Parks through collaboration, stewardship and fund-raising.

Tell us about your role on the Spokane Park Board and why you’re passionate about participating on it.
I was appointed to the Spokane Park Board in July 2025 after several years of active involvement with the Friends of Coeur d’Alene Park in Browne’s Addition. As a neighbor deeply invested in our local parks and an early childhood educator, I recognize the critical role parks play in supporting the healthy growth and development of children. Parks provide opportunities for learning, exploration, and meaningful interaction between parents and children. I sought to join the Park Board to help inform how our park spaces can best serve families and foster community connection. I remain enthusiastic about the continued potential of Spokane’s parks to enrich lives and strengthen neighborhoods.

What’s something the Spokane Park Board is working on that you’re proud of?
I am particularly proud of how our Park Board members and community volunteers collaborated to secure passage of the Together Spokane park levy and school bond. This initiative represents an important partnership between the Park Board and the Spokane School District, which is enabling new and long-overdue development across our park system. I am inspired by the dedication of my fellow Board members and remain committed to advancing our shared mission of ensuring that Spokane’s parks continue to evolve as welcoming, vibrant spaces for all residents.

Why is it important that people get involved on boards and commissions in the community?
Serving on the Spokane Park Board has shown me firsthand the meaningful impact that citizens can have on the quality of life in our city. Spokane’s boards and commissions are comprised of volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise to improving our community through thoughtful collaboration and public service. This commitment—through regular meetings, committee participation, and strategic planning—plays a vital role in shaping Spokane’s future. I encourage all residents to explore opportunities to serve by visiting the City of Spokane website. By following your passions and engaging in civic involvement, you can make a lasting difference in the community we share.
