Service is the act of helping or doing work for someone. As I reflect on the extraordinary contributions of Sandy Williams, I hope we are all reminded of the profound impact one individual can have on a community. Sandy is not just a champion of justice; she is a beacon of hope and empowerment for countless individuals. Her unwavering dedication to social equity and inclusion has transformed our community, inspiring future generations to thrive.
Sandy’s advocacy has left an indelible mark on our society. Through her tireless efforts, she has helped build a united community where every voice is heard. Her passion for social equity resonates deeply with all of us, fostering a spirit of togetherness that strengthens the fabric of our neighborhoods.
One of Sandy's most significant contributions is founding the Carl Maxey Center for community economic empowerment. Through this initiative, she has led numerous projects to uplift the East Central Community, creating pathways to economic opportunity. As the founding editor of The Black Lens, Sandy has given voice to narratives often overlooked in mainstream media, ensuring that the stories of the Black Community are told and celebrated.
But Sandy's legacy extends beyond these accomplishments. She co-founded Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR), served as the first Grand Marshall in the Spokane Pride Parade, and served as an advisor and member of various community-based organizations. Her influence has been a guiding light, reminding us that one committed individual can spark significant change in the lives of many.
As many in the community have said, “September is for Sandy,” and as a beloved leader, friend, and mentor, we are inspired to carry forward her vision. Her spirit continues to motivate us as we strive to promote justice and empowerment within our community. In recognition of her incredible journey, the city has established the “Sandy Williams Day of Service” to be observed each September on her birthday, September 13.
On this day, we invite everyone to come together and share their time, talents, or resources with one of the many organizations in Spokane that Sandy has positively impacted. It is an opportunity for us to unite as a community and honor her legacy by continuing the work she so passionately committed to.
