Civilian Training Opportunities

Below you will find a list of training opportunities and presentations for civilians offered by the Spokane Police Department. Registration for any course should be completed no later than 10 days prior to class. Check back frequently for upcoming dates. If you have any questions about any of the training or presentations listed below, please contact the Spokane Police Academy at 509.742.8100.

Police 101

Police 101 is a basic introduction into the world of police decision making and use of force. Lasting between 2 and 4 hours, the course provides insight for civilians into the situations law enforcement officers encounter, and then explains the reasons behind police response. The class is designed as a facilitated discussion using videos and other examples to allow participants to interact in the process.

This class is easily modified and has been provided in school settings from the elementary to college level, as well as for private business and other community groups. This course can be taught at a workplace or business or held at the Spokane Police Academy, accommodating groups of up to 100 people. This program is provided as a community service and is free of charge.

Enhancing the Survival Mindset – Level 1

The Enhancing the Survival Mindset Level 1 course offers women participants the opportunity to learn the basics of self-defense. The course consists of a classroom portion where participants will receive information on crime statistics, situational awareness, and survival mindset. Hands-on training introduces participants to defensive tactic techniques and places participants into realistic threat scenarios. A participant's survival mindset will determine the outcome of these scenarios. Attendees must be at least middle school aged accompanied by an adult to participate. The charge for this class is $25.

Enhancing the Survival Mindset – Level 2

This is the next step in the reinforcement and development of the survival mindset. Women participants are exposed to approximately six new threat scenarios that will enhance your schemas for real life survival. Attendees must be at least middle school aged accompanied by an adult and must have completed Level 1 of Enhancing the Survival Mindset to participate. The charge for this class is $25.

Enhancing the Survival Mindset “Road Show Presentation”

This class is available to our community organizations and businesses. The class is very interactive and covers topics of situational awareness, pre-planning, work place safety and self defense. It is designed to enhance our safety in all arenas of our lives. The class lasts one to two hours and is free of charge. If you are interested in hosting one of the courses you will need PowerPoint presentation capability.

Citizens Academy – Level 1

Students are introduced to police training (hands-on and virtual), operations and investigative procedures, special police units, etc. The Citizen's Academy will culminate with a graduation ceremony where students will be awarded certificates of completion. There is no fee for this course.
