Spokane Public Schools is proposing to replace the existing Sacajawea Middle School.The proposed project would involve building a new 140,000 square foot, two-story building in the playfield north of the existing Sacajawea Middle School building and once complete, demolishing the existing 1960 Sacajawea Middle School. This school will have 46 teaching spaces to accommodate approximately 825 students grades 6 to 8. In addition to instructional space, a gymnasium, commons/cafeteria, band and choir, other support spaces, and outdoor playfields will be included. A new parking lot will be in the southwest corner with entry/exits on 33rct Avenue. A new school bus loading/offloading lane will access from Grand Boulevard, run south of the new building and exit to 33rd Avenue. A new service lane will enter the campus from Lamonte Street and run along the north boundary to the middle of the new building. Parent drop-off and loading will be along Lamonte Street in front of the new building. This application will be reviewed as a Type II Conditional Use Permit by the Planning Director.
The Planning Director has issued an approval for the proposal. Approval, subject to conditions of the above mentioned project shall be substantially in conformance with the plans and application on file in the Planning & Development Department. This Conditional Use Permit shall become effective on October 19, 2021, unless an appeal is filed by this date. This permit shall expire on October 6, 2024, if a building permit has not been issued by the City of Spokane Building Department for this work.
Appeals or requests for reconsideration of decisions by the Planning Director are governed by Spokane Municipal Code 17G.060.210 – Appeals. Decisions of the Planning Director regarding Type I or II applications are final unless appealed to the City of Spokane Hearing Examiner. All appeals must be filed with the Planning and Development Services Department within fourteen (14) calendar days of the date of the decision. All requests for reconsideration must be filed with Planning and Development Services within seven (7) days of the date of the decision. The date of the decision is October 6, 2021. THE DATE OF THE LAST DAY TO APPEAL IS October 19, 2021 AT 5:00 P.M. In addition to paying the appeal fee ($250) to appeal the decision, the ordinance requires payment if a transcript fee to the City of Spokane to cover the costs of preparing any required transcripts.
