Overview

This project improves pedestrian safety around Scott Elementary by adding sidewalks, curb extensions (bumpouts), and enhanced crosswalks. Traffic-calming measures will slow vehicles along key streets, creating safer routes for students walking to and from school.

Key Objectives

  • Pedestrian Safety: Provide continuous sidewalks and upgraded crosswalks for students.
  • Traffic Calming: Install curb extensions on Hartson Avenue and 5th Avenue to reduce speeds and improve visibility.

Project Scope

The main activities within this project include:

  • Sidewalk Installation:
    • Hartson Avenue (Freya to Havana): 6-foot-wide sidewalk with curb and gutter on the north side (~2,480 feet).
    • Rebecca Street (Hartson to 5th): 5-foot-wide sidewalk with curb and gutter (~615 feet).
  • Curb Extensions & ADA Ramps:
    • Hartson/Myrtle: Curb extensions and ADA ramps on both sides of Hartson.
    • Hartson/Florida: Curb extensions on the northwest and northeast corners, plus ADA ramps.
    • Hartson/Havana: Curb extensions on the northwest and southwest corners, plus ADA ramps.
    • 5th Avenue/Rebecca: Curb extensions, ADA ramps, and a relocated crosswalk to align with new bumpouts.

  • Total Project Cost: $1,959,800 (covers design, construction, and contingency)
  • Sources: Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS), Local Arterial Street Fund Match
