Spokane Fire Department officials are investigating if squatters are responsible for starting house fire.

Last evening just before 11 p.m., the Spokane Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 1800 block of S. Maple Blvd. Spokane Engine 9 was the first crew on scene and located an attached garage to the rear of the house that was filled with heat and smoke. The fire was also starting to spread to the interior of the home which appeared to be under renovation. Fire crews were able to quickly coordinate a fire attack and ventilation operation stopping the fire from spreading. No injuries were reported.

The residence sustained smoke and heat damage. The garage, constructed of cinder block and concrete, was also damaged along with all of its contents, including one vehicle.

Witnesses advise fire officials squatters had been living in house and were seen leaving before the fire was reported. The cause remains under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit.
