Wednesday, Jan. 1, 7:45 p.m., the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 4400 Block of North Howard Street. The structure was heavily involved with fire when fire companies arrived.

Shortly after the alarm was transmitted, 911 received several calls indicating there was a working fire with flames showing from several windows on the first floor of the home. Fortunately, the residence was not occupied at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.

SFD companies arrived within 3-minutes of dispatch and immediately went to work in high heat and smoke conditions to extinguish the interior fire, as well as attack the exterior fire that was extending vertically into the eaves of the home.

Firefighters successfully contained to the first floor and ceiling structural members. The building and contents value is 125,000, and SFD limited the damage to an estimated $60,000. Residents of the home were unable to be contacted immediately following the fire. The nature of the fire is currently undetermined, and SFD fire investigators are working at the scene to determine the cause.
